Invented Spelling

Picture
We will be using “invented spelling” in our classroom soon. There are several stages in this process, which starts with the representation of a word with a single letter. It gradually progresses to the inclusion of several letters per word, eventually adding vowels and all the correct conventions of spelling and grammar. Within a group of young children all stages are represented. The aim of the process approach to writing is to allow the children the freedom and confidence to express themselves without being concerned how readers will view their finished work. As the children add to their knowledge of spelling and grammar usage through our Language Arts program, their “invented spelling: will accommodate this increased information.

Later in the spring, the children will continue using this approach. In addition, several of their best writing pieces will be written in individual books which will contain correct spelling and conventions.

Example:

Te bot iz n te wtr.

(The boat is in the water.)
